Hatemail and CritiquesI am happy to receive your feedback, both positive and negative (all good art is controversial). Please send me an email with your comments. I won't post your name or email unless you ask me to. Below are some of the recent negative comments I've received. "You are not clever" - E.A. [I wasn't trying to be clever, only to bring out the inner beauty of the humble taco.]
"Is this a joke? Who the fuck would buy your stupid taco pictures. This is stupid." - O.H. [No, it's not really a joke. I'd call it more of an experiment. If the internet works the way I think it does, there are enough people who will find this interesting/creative that will want to buy a taco print to make my time photographing them worthwhile. We'll see.]
"not so fine really more like badly lit." - JW "It would have been better if you had photographed hand-made taco shells - the mass-manufactured ones leave me cold." - Kim "Actually, I think they look kind of... sinister? I can imagine dramatic music playing behind those images... However, I will agree that they do look "interesting"". -aj "It's a little interesting. But to me, kind of boring. I don't know. Maybe he should've put in some soft tacos." - john Don't know if you really care about this, but a higher contrast and closer shot would make these pictures fine art. Right now, thyre drab, the light is boring and the composition gives nothing to hod your attention. A close-up, maybe cross processed (color) or a really over-saturated color level would bring out the spectrum of color the taco has to offer. Oh, and one more thing, a taco on a plate is not something i need your pictures to see. A taco on the street at a low eye level, or a taco falling from the sky with a really fast or slow shutter speed would really be cool. Sorry if that was all another language, but i'd be happy to explain anything if you really want to make some cash off your pictures. -Jordan [Hey Jordan, true Fine art is not about making "cash"] I've seen some ridiculous items published by your good self, but trying to sell to the art world with the use of a Venn diagram really is offensive. Artists DON'T DO MATHS, (I'm English there's an 's' on maths), or science or logic or reason. In terms you may understand A^M=E. (I state this symbolically, to demonstrate my understanding of such bollocks. -- Marcus Listen man how can you even think of selling photographs that look like this. I am a senior at an actual fine art photography school. I have curated four shows already and am preparing to curate my own show. so by no means am I a professional but I do have an idea about how a print should look. you want a real crit, ok.
first your prints are flat
they are muddy, meaning that they are quite gray
also they are extraordinarily dark
causing them to lack any latitude in tonal value or separation
the ones that the tones are separated only contain fifteen different tones of grey
the human can see 256 different tones of grey plus pure black and white
if you are interested in learning how to print with a full range of tones look up Roberet(Bob) Kazma he is one of the greatest black and white printers working on the east coast although he prints with palladium. any way
these prints are un resolved and have no concept.
